How the conversion works

Serbian has 30 letters in both scripts, and each Cyrillic letter has exactly one Latin match. Three Cyrillic letters are written with two Latin letters: Љ is Lj, Њ is Nj and Џ is Dž. That is why Cyrillic to Latin is always exact, while Latin to Cyrillic has to decide in a few words whether two letters are one sound.

Lj, Nj and Dž in capitals

When only the first letter of a word is a capital, the converter writes Lj, Nj and Dž, so Љиљана becomes Ljiljana. When the whole word is in capitals, it writes LJ, NJ and DŽ, so ЉУБАВ becomes LJUBAV. This follows common practice; we could not check it against the current Pravopis.

When nj, lj or dž are two letters

In Latin, lj, nj and dž are usually one sound and one Cyrillic letter. The Pravopis notes that in some words they are two sounds, mostly where a prefix meets the rest of the word: nadživeti is надживети, injekcija is инјекција and konjugacija is конјугација. The converter knows these words and the words built from them:

A word that is not on the list is converted the usual way. Words that look similar but have one sound, such as odžak (оџак) or konj (коњ), stay correct.

    What stays in Latin

    • Links and e-mail addresses, such as www.example.com and info@example.com.
    • Words with q, w, x or y, such as Wi-Fi, Excel or YouTube, and words with letters that are not in the Serbian alphabet, such as é or ü.
    • Some well known brand names, such as Google, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, plus @mentions and #hashtags.
    • Roman numerals such as II, III, IV and XXI. VI is still converted, because it is also the word vi.

Other foreign words and names are converted letter by letter, so McDonald’s becomes МцДоналд’с. Read the result once and fix such words by hand.

    Text without č, ć, š, ž and đ

If the Latin text was typed without these letters, for example cevapi instead of ćevapi or Djordje instead of Đorđe, the converter cannot know which letter was meant, so the Cyrillic will be wrong in those places. The tool warns you when a longer text has none of them.

    FAQ

    Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, and the text is not sent or saved anywhere. When you close the page, it is gone.

Can I convert a whole document?

Yes. Paste the text, then copy the result or download it as a .txt file. Only the text is converted, formatting such as bold or tables is not kept.

Why are some letters left as they are?

Letters that are not in the Serbian alphabet, for example Russian ы or я, have no Serbian match. The converter leaves them as they are and tells you which ones it found.

What about lj or nj typed as one character?

Some programs write lj, nj and dž as one special character. The converter first splits them into two ordinary letters, so they convert correctly.

Sources: UN Working Group on Romanization Systems, report on Serbian (version 4.0, 2016) for the letters, and the Pravopis srpskohrvatskog jezika (school edition, 1960, section 1.1) for the two letter rule. The current Pravopis of Matica srpska is not freely available online, so we could not check it directly. Checked in October 2026. The tool only uses the text you enter. Nothing is sent or stored.
