When PNG is better than JPG
JPG saves space by dropping fine detail every time the file is saved. That is fine for photos, but text, lines and flat colors get blurry edges. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so nothing changes when you edit the image and save it again.
- Screenshots and images with text, which stay sharp in PNG.
- Graphics you will keep editing in Canva, Figma or Photoshop.
- Images that will get a transparent background later. Converting alone does not make the background transparent, because a JPG has no transparency to bring along.
For photos on a website or in an ad, keep JPG or use WebP. The same photo saved as PNG can be several times larger.
FAQ
Will PNG make my JPG sharper?
No. PNG keeps what is already in the JPG, including the blur and blocks the JPG added. It only stops the image from getting worse when you edit it and save it again.
Does the background become transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparent areas, so the PNG keeps the same background. To remove a background you need an editing tool, and PNG then keeps the transparency.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your files never leave your device. The browser converts them in this tab, and the location and camera data is removed from the new files.
The tool only uses the files you add. Nothing is sent or stored.
