When to turn PNG into JPG
Photos saved as PNG are large, because PNG keeps every pixel. JPG is made for photos and makes them much smaller, which helps when a website, a form or an email has a size limit.
- Photos and screenshots of photos that were saved as PNG.
- Images for email, where a smaller attachment arrives faster.
- Images for upload forms with a file size limit.
Keep PNG for logos, icons and images with transparency. JPG cannot be transparent, so transparent areas get the color you choose, white unless you change it.
FAQ
What happens to the transparent background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are filled with the color you choose above. White is the default. Pick the color of the page where the image will appear.
Which quality should I choose?
Start at 85% and compare the result with the original. Higher keeps more detail and makes a bigger file. Text and sharp lines show the loss first, so screenshots may need a higher setting or should stay PNG.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Your files never leave your device. The browser converts them in this tab, and nothing is sent or saved.
The tool only uses the files you add. Nothing is sent or stored.
